BICSI Beyond 2026: Key Technology, Infrastructure, and Industry Trends Shaping the Future

A futurist, an astronaut and a former UFC fighter walk into a conference.
No, this is not the start of a joke! This was the experience of attendees — myself included — at this year's BICSI Beyondconference.
I wasn't sure what to expect with the unconventional lineup, but their powerful messages about the future of our industry were just the thing to get me thinking about the future of my organization and its place in the future of the industry.
Luckily, I have a whole blog post for details, but if I had to boil it down to one sentence, I would say the key takeaway was:
Success will require more than technical expertise; it will demand vision, adaptability, leadership and purpose.

Preparing for a Future That Arrives Faster Than Expected
Griffen, known for his work advising governments, global brands, and international organizations, challenged us to recognize that the convergence of technology, leadership and geopolitics will shape the future of industries and societies alike.
For technology professionals, the takeaway was clear:
Organizations will need resilient, scalable foundations capable of supporting innovations that may not yet be fully realized.

Leadership Lessons from Space
The conversation shifted midweek to the human side of achievement with keynote speaker Mike Massimino, former NASA astronaut and veteran of two Hubble Space missions.
Drawing from his experiences in space and from his bestselling books Spaceman and Moonshot, Massimino shared lessons in teamwork, perseverance, leadership and overcoming obstacles.
His message resonated strongly with me, as we work internally to strengthen our team and prepare for the future of CKC.
Whether launching into space or deploying a mission-critical network, success is built through teams committed to a common goal and willing to adapt when challenges arise.
For an industry tasked with designing and supporting the systems organizations depend on every day, Massimino's perspective reinforced the importance of disciplined execution and continuous improvement.

In his keynote, From the Ring to the Rainforest, Wren shared his journey from professional achievement and personal struggle to humanitarian work in the Congo Basin, delivering clean water, housing, healthcare and other essential resources to underserved communities.
His story centered on resilience, accountability and gratitude, as well as the impact that individuals and organizations can make when they focus on serving others.
While his presentation was not directly about technology, it highlighted a principle that applies throughout the ICT industry: technology has its greatest value when it improves people's lives.
That is something we can never forget in our line of work: the infrastructure we design ultimately exists to help people connect and thrive.
Justin Wren's nonprofit, Fight for the Forgotten, has delivered clean water, housing, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods and freedom from slavery to thousands in underserved communities.
The Bigger Picture
If I can point to one common thread throughout all three keynote presentations — something I can take back to my own organization as we move our business into the future — it would be:
Pay attention to the bigger picture.
Matthew Griffin spoke about anticipating the future. Mike Massimino emphasized the teamwork required to achieve ambitious goals. And Justin Wren reminded attendees to focus on the impact of their work and the people it serves.
As the pace of technological change continues to accelerate, organizations best positioned to succeed are those that combine forward-thinking strategy, strong leadership and a commitment to meaningful outcomes.
And perhaps that was the greatest lesson from BICSI BEYOND 2026:
The future is not simply defined by technological advancement, but by the vision, purpose and leadership that ensure progress serves a greater human purpose.
That's a lot to chew on as we finish out 2026 and plan for what is to come in 2027 and beyond.
